A MAN in his 30s was killed when he was believed to have stepped in front of a train travelling at 80 mph through Liss station on Tuesday. British Transport Police (BTP) say the man, from the Liss area, would have died instantly when the incident occurred at 10-25 am. A BTP spokesman said: "The train was going through the station on the north-bound line to London when a man stepped out from the platform. "Ambulance crews arrived at around 11 am and pronounced him dead. We interviewed two witnesses at the scene and we are not treating the death as suspicious." The 9-45 am service from Portsmouth Harbour to London Waterloo was a through train, travelling non-stop between Petersfield and Haslemere. Services on the route were delayed and some cancelled as police carried out an investigation. A woman working close to the station told The Herald she could hear the train stopping from her office. She said: "We heard a horrible screeching sound as the train came to a halt. We could see police at the scene and a body bag on the platform." The man's family has decided not to release his name.
