A MAN fell to his death from a train as it approached the tunnel at Buriton on its way to Waterloo on Good Friday.
The four-carriage train, which left Portsmouth Harbour at 5-09 pm, was 200 yards south of the tunnel when the incident happened.
According to witnesses the middle-aged man, travelling in the first carriage, opened a door and threw himself out.
Passengers alerted the guard and the train was stopped at Petersfield.
The line was closed for three hours and passengers travelled by road to Guildford, where they were able to continue their journey.
British Transport Police offers got onto the track from a crossing at Ditcham and recovered the manÕs body from the side of the line. The body was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital at Cosham.
The man has been identified as Richard Connor (49) from the Isle of Wight.
Police spoke to some passengers on the train and the incident is not being treated as suspicious but they would like to speak to a man who was in the first carriage and is believed to have witnessed the incident. This passenger was taken by taxi from Petersfield to Guildford.

A full report will be submitted to the coroner in due course and an inquest will be carried out.
