AN injured 18-year- old Haslemere man had a lucky escape in the early hours of Saturday morning when he was found lying across the railway tracks at Haslemere railway station.

He was discovered by railway maintenance workers just after 4-30 am. He was believed to have broken his leg and was thought to have been drinking.

It is not clear how long he had been lying there or how he had made his way into the railway station and on to the tracks.

A spokesman for British Transport Police told The Herald this week: "It transpired that he had been drinking all night and couldn't recall how he got there. He thinks he fell."

Luckily part of the line where he fell had been closed to trains and the power cut to allow workmen to carry out maintenance work on the track. However, the spokesman said the man "was quite close to a live rail".

Railtrack closed a further section of the track and cut the power to enable a Haslemere fire crew and paramedics to rescue the man from the tracks using a long board.

He was taken to the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford.

The transport police spokesman has warned people about the dangers of excessive drinking when out and about.

"We know the message about drinking and driving. And certainly if drinking means catching public transport, then people shouldn't be so drunk that they put themselves in danger of falling on to the tracks and possibly between trains."

He added that people should always stay within the public areas of railway stations.

It is the second time a member of the public has accidentally fallen on to the track at Haslemere station, within the last two months.

In an incident in May, a Petworth man was seriously injured when he was thought to have fallen back against a train as it moved away from the station and was spun on to the railway line.
