A YOUNG man has sustained life-threatening head injuries after his car collided with a tree on the A283 south of Chiddingfold.

The accident happened on the A283 Petworth Road at its junction with Rodgate Lane. The black Skoda Octavia, was travelling along the A283 from the Petworth area towards the Chiddingfold area, and the accident occurred a few yards into Surrey from its border with Sussex. Police officers discovered the collision at 4 am on Sunday, when they spotted a significant amount of debris on the carriageway. 

The car involved was not immediately noticeable from the road but was found nearby with the driver inside. It is believed the collision had happened some hours before. 

The driver, described by police as a man in his late 20s, was taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital by ambulance. 

He was later transferred to the Atkinson Morley unit of St. George's Hospital in Tooting.

Police are appealing to people who noticed the black Skoda Octavia, or noticed the debris on the road surface, to phone Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222 and ask for the duty sergeant at Guildford police station.
