THEFTS of manhole and gully covers have cost Surrey County Council £160,000 since January – enough to fill nearly 3,000 potholes – and Waverley is among the worst-hit boroughs.

The council is warning road users to take care following a spate of thefts of gully and manhole covers across the county. Already this year, 536 covers have been stolen, mainly from remote rural locations.

It costs between £200 and £400 to replace a cover, depending on the location and the type of cover used.
