RUNNER Chris Norkett completed his first marathon just a few weeks ago – but he is already looking ahead to his next marathon challenge in June!
The Alton man completed this year’s Virgin London Marathon in six hours 40 minutes on April 22 to raise more than £2,000 for Pancreatic Cancer Action in memory of his brother Tim, who died from the disease.
Chris said: “Unfortunately, the heat really took its toll on me and I had to slow right down to a walk on numerous occasions. That was the hardest part really, dealing with the heat and staying hydrated.
“The crowds are like nothing I’ve ever experienced. Tens of thousands of people cheering everybody on, shouting encouragement and urging you to keep going.
“It was a brilliant start to my year of raising money for Pancreatic Cancer Action and I’m looking forward to my next marathon in June and my first ultra-marathon of the year in July.”
Pancreatic cancer is the UK’s fifth biggest cancer killer. The survival rate is just five per cent, which is the lowest of any cancer.
Pancreatic Cancer Action is committed to working toward picking up an earlier diagnosis of the disease so that surgery, currently the only cure, is made available to the sufferer.
The charity funds research into early diagnosis, provides medical education programmes, and launches awareness campaigns.
Chris has already raised a whopping £2,060 with his London effort, but he is still taking sponsorship for his challenges later in the year.
