SWIMABILITY member Mark Barber has been celebrated for swimming more than 2,200 lengths of Farnham Leisure Centre last year.
A special presentation was made at the centre by the chairman of Swimability, Alan Taylor in recognition of Mark’s efforts.
Swimability was previously known as the Farnham Sports Association for the Disabled, which was founded in 1981.
Mark swam an impressive 34.4 miles of the leisure centre main pool during 2017.
Alan Taylor said: “One mile equates to 64 lengths of the main swimming pool, so it’s been a huge effort by Mark and he’s completed the distance during last year’s weekly Saturday morning swimming sessions.
“He’s very determined. You could argue that he’d swum the English Channel and he was well on his way back!”
Mark, from Bentley, is a keen sailor and swimmer, belonging to both Farnham Swimability and the Frensham Pond Sailability.
The two sports clubs often work together during the year and a number of participants enjoy both sporting activities.
The secretary of Swimability, Jenny Taylor, added: “Only a couple of weeks ago we shared an annual lunch event which was attended by 72 members of both clubs and we were kindly supported by some local businesses, Forest Lodge, Morgan’s Butchers and Cook, Farnham.
“The two clubs share common goals so working together makes sense and creates a great atmosphere.”
Swimability operates from the Farnham Leisure Centre, offering aqua exercise each Saturday morning from 9am to 10am.
Jenny continued: “We welcome new members and also new volunteers if anyone would like to help out at our friendly club for one hour a week.
“There are easy access steps and a hoist if anyone needs help getting into the pool.”
