ALTON'S French Market was cancelled at the eleventh hour due to the threat of violence at British ports.Market traders, due to arrive on the overnight ferry were put off coming when an agent for the French Traditional Market, Phillipe Le Grande, received a tip-off that pro-British beef campaigners would be blockading ports of entry.
The three day market was to have provided the stage for a peaceful demonstration by local farmers over the French governments illegal ban on the import of British beef. The demonstration is still going ahead.
