ALL Hallows student Katherine Horton has been selected as one of only 20 students from the UK to travel to Hungary over the new year and take part in an International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) training camp in Budapest.

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the world championship mathematics competition for secondary school students, so to be part of the UK IMO squad is a huge achievement.

The camp is held annually in July in a different country with entrants from 100 nations. This year it will be in Hong Kong. Only six students are selected and the competition is fierce for places.

Katherine has always been fascinated with maths. She combines hard work with talent and has gained in confidence through the work she has done with her maths teachers at All Hallows Catholic School.

All Hallows’ headteacher Elizabeth Lutzeier said: “We are so proud of Katherine’s achievements. In the recent UK maths competition for years 11, 12 and 13, she placed third in the whole country. Obviously, we are now hoping she will make it to Hong Kong in July.”
