IT was mayhem in a Haslemere car park when an elderly driver careered at high speed into parked cars and narrowly avoided crashing into a mother and child and a traffic warden.

A Haslemere man who witnessed the incident, Dominic Rushby, told The Herald it had been a "miracle" that no one had been injured.

The incident took place in the main town-centre car park at around 3 pm last Thursday.

The driver is described by Mr Rushby as having "sped around the car park as though it was a racing circuit".

Seven cars were damaged in collisions with the grey Peugeot 205, driven by an 88-year-old man from Chiddingfold.

Mr Rushby told The Herald that he had noticed the elderly man walking to his car looking "very unsteady on his feet".

He said that he had watched to see that the man got to his car safely.

However, it was after the elderly man got into the driving seat that the drama began.

After reversing directly into a parked car, the Peugeot sped off across the car park. Mr Rushby ran after the car trying to write down the registration number.

Before Mr Rushby had chance to catch up with the speeding car, he saw it ram into another parked car.

The impact pushed that car forward, damaging two more cars.

The elderly man then drove off at breakneck speed, narrowly missing a woman, her toddler, and a traffic warden.

"I just couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him ram into another car - a brand new seven series BMW.

"The owner later told me he had only bought it last week," Mr Rushby said.

The elderly driver, who wrote off his car during the last smash, was helped out from behind the wheel by Mr Rushby. An ambulance was called and paramedics took the driver to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, where he was treated for shock and later discharged.

A police spokesman said officers were investigating the incident.
