A mayor has praised a local walking football club after its FA Cup success during a visit to a town care provider.
Bob Crooks, Godalming Town Mayor, visited Guardian Angels Carers Godalming earlier this month to meet players from Godalming Walking Football Club following their victory in the inaugural Walking Football FA Cup.
The visit brought together players, club officials and staff from the care company to mark the achievement and highlight a growing partnership between the organisations.
Godalming Walking Football Club, formed in 2017, has grown to around 70 members and now runs teams across age groups including 50+, 60+, 65+ and 70+. The club is also planning to launch a women’s team.
Its partnership with Guardian Angels Carers Godalming includes sponsorship of kits and equipment, as well as first aid training for members.
Glenn Mitchell, vice chair of the club, said: “Guardian Angels Carers Godalming has been a true partner to the club, not just a name on a shirt. Their support has helped us invest in equipment, provide kit and grow our reach across the local area.
“Having a competitive team means we’re able to support players of all abilities, and give them the opportunity to play at the level that best suits them.
“The first aid training we have received through Guardian Angels has also made a real difference. Knowing we have a qualified first aider at every game gives extra confidence to everyone involved.”
Tim Corry, co-founder of Guardian Angels Carers Godalming, said: “We are proud to support Godalming Walking Football Club because it reflects so many of the values that matter to us as a care company. The club helps people stay active, connected and involved in their community, and that has real value.
“Loneliness and isolation affect many people as they get older, so it is fantastic to support an organisation that creates such a warm, inclusive and welcoming environment.
“This partnership is about more than sponsorship. It is about backing something that genuinely improves lives locally.”
Mr Crooks said: “Godalming is fortunate to have a wide range of clubs and organisations that make a real contribution to community life, and Godalming Walking Football Club is a wonderful example of that.
“To see the club achieve success in the inaugural Walking Football FA Cup is a tremendous moment, and it is especially pleasing to see that success supported by a local business with strong community values.
“This is exactly the kind of partnership that helps strengthen the town.”
The visit highlighted the role of local partnerships in supporting community sport and tackling issues such as loneliness and isolation, while helping residents stay active and connected.
