HASLEMERE Mayor Sahran Abeysundara was invited to a party at the House of Commons by one of his mayoral charities – The Kaleidoscope Trust – which campaigns internationally for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people.

The party held late last year was held to thank patrons and fundraisers for their support and hard work.

Welcoming the trust’s nomination as one of the charities supported by the mayor in his term of office, a spokesman said: “Mayor Abeysundara has an amazing record of activism and leadership to promote and protect the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people in his home country Sri Lanka and in the UK.

“His election is a credit to both his demonstrable leadership in addressing the concerns of his local community and to the progress of embracing openly LGBT people in public service.

“With support from the Mayor of Haslemere’s charity scheme we will continue to campaign for justice, dignity and equality for LGBT people around the world.”
