TALKS between the town council and the police have taken place in a bid to tackle yobbish behaviour in Haslemere. On Monday, mayor Michael Dover and deputy mayor Brian Howard held an informal meeting with Inspector Graham Weaver to find a way forward following the recent problems. After the meeting, Mr Dover said that he felt the future was looking brighter for the town. As previously reported by The Herald, the town recently suffered a night of disturbances and assaults in the Wey Hill area, which resulted in three teenagers and a man being arrested. Shottermill residents have also complained about litter and anti-social behaviour on Lion Green since the start of the school holidays. Problems with vandalism have continued and last Wednesday, a wooden bus shelter on the Hindhead Road near Critchmere Hill was ripped from its foundations and thrown into the road, causing £400 worth of damage. Police received calls from residents at around 10 pm that the road was partially blocked and officers removed the debris. Waverley Borough Council, which owns the shelter, told The Herald that it has been added to a list of shelters which need replacing. Mr Dover said that the meeting with Insp Weaver, who took over borough policing in April, had been productive. "It was possible for us to discuss matters which are sometimes better not discussed in a public forum," he said. "We discussed in particular the incidents which happened in Wey Hill, as well as the problems of having a centralised telephone response system which caused difficulties because the operator did not know exactly where Wey Hill was. "All three of us have very positive views about youngsters and have the view that the majority of them are good kids. It is just one or two who spoil it for the majority." He added that the informal meetings would continue on a regular basis and was hopeful that the town would see a real difference. "I am very positive about the new inspector," he said. "He is a young man with a young family and has lots of new ideas." • Anyone who saw the bus shelter being vandalised or has any other information is asked to contact Haslemere police on 0845 125 2222.
