FIREFIGHTERS from Alton were among more than 15 crews from across the county who fought to save a burning home in Paice Lane, Medstead, last Wednesdsay.

They were called out at approximately 12-43 pm to find an Òintense fireÓ raging which eventually destroyed around 80 per cent of the roof and first floor, with fire, smoke and water causing 50 per cent damage to the ground floor.

Heading the contingent were three crews from Alton who were working alongside crews from Alresford, Winchester, Bordon, Sutton Scottney and Eastleigh. They were supported by a special equipment unit from Basingstoke, a multi-role vehicle from Havant and an incident control unit from Winchester. They used breathing apparatus, jets and hose reels to deal with the blaze.

According to a spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, the original crews were replaced at around 7 pm by relief crews from Odiham, Fordingbridge, Basingstoke and Eastleigh, with crews from Rushmoor and Grayshott arriving at midnight to deal with the Òhot spotsÓ.

Alton crews returned to the scene on the following day to carry out a final inspection.

While investigations are on-going as to the cause of the fire, it is thought the blaze might have started in the roof, where a strong wind would have encouraged it to take hold.

The spokesman paid tribute to neighbouring residents who helped by providing parking spaces for the special equipment units and allowed vehicles to park in their driveways to help with traffic congestion.
