A PUBLIC meeting to be held in Haslemere Hall on Friday, December 6, has been postponed following the Health Secretary’s confirmation last week that Haslemere Hospital’s minor injuries unit (MIU) will not shut.

Election candidate Jeremy Hunt had organised the event to enable residents to question NHS bosses about their intentions.

He has pledged to hold the public meeting at a later date when the NHS is ready to talk about what the possibilities are for expanding provision at the MIU.

Mr Hunt said: “The commitment to keep the unit open is a major victory for those of us in Haslemere who have been campaigning for it.

“Some wanted to cancel the meeting, but I believe there is merit in hearing from local NHS bosses what their plans are to develop the unit now that we know it is going to be staying open.

“Around half of local residents responding to my survey would like it to stay open in the evenings and nearly three quarters favour weekend openings, so I will be organising a public meeting in the New Year to find out if this is possible.”
