ALFIE and his dad joined Haslemere Mayor Malcolm Carter, mayoress Sandie Carter, and more than 400 people for the first memorial walk in memory of the two year-old’s “amazing” mum – Clare Vedde, a former Camelsdale Primary School teacher.

Clare was diagnosed with breast cancer just months after Alfie, was born in 2016.

After a year-long battle with the disease, she sadly died on July 18, last year, when she was just 31 years old.

In memory of a much-loved teacher, the school started an educational trust for Alfie, Alfie’s Trust. Its ‘Walk for Alfie’, will be held annually to raise money for the trust.

More than £5,000 was raised at the first walk, a 10km circuit around Marley and Lynchmere Commons. Among the walkers were staff, ex-pupils who were taught by Clare and members of the Camelsdale community.

Clare’s mother, Lesley Carter, said: “We are so grateful to everyone who took part in ‘Walk for Alfie’ in memory of our amazing Clare.

“It was an emotional afternoon, and amazing to see so many of Clare’s colleagues, family and friends.”

To mark the occasion, Wey Hill- based Dylan’s Ice Cream sold a new addition to the range named ‘Alfie’s Volcanic Vanilla’.

Headteacher Sarah Palmer said: “What an amazing day we had for little Alfie and in memory of our wonderful colleague, teacher and friend, Clare.

“I would sincerely like to thank so many people, businesses and our sponsors, Keats estate agents and Progress International, for their time and generosity in helping make the day happen and the success it was – a truly tremendous show of community spirit and support.”
