MEN can be victims of domestic abuse too, is the message behind a new film launched by Surrey Police to raise awareness of the support available for those suffering at the hands of a controlling and emotionally abusive partner.
The film, which details the story of a Surrey man whose relationship with his girlfriend gradually moves from passionate to abusive, highlights the fact that one in six men will be a victim of this degrading crime in their lifetime.
The videos are part of a push to explain that domestic abuse doesn’t have to leave physical marks but can just as commonly see the perpetrator subtly intimidating, controlling and humiliating their victim.
Feelings this creates can be a loss of self-worth and confidence, feelings of being isolated, guilty and confused.
Pc Bridie Anderson, force domestic abuse advisor, said: “Due to the image in our society of men being physically stronger, they may also feel emasculated and ‘less of a man’, and so find it harder to seek help.”
However, a maximum sentence of five years in prison can now be given if continuous coercive or controlling behaviour can be demonstrated.
If you or someone you know is trapped in a controlling relationship you can find help by calling Surrey’s Domestic Abuse helpline in complete confidence on 01483 776822 or visit www.surreyagain
