ONE of Farnham's representatives on the European Parliament was in Sri Lanka when the tsunami hit on Sunday and is now appealing to Farnham people for aid in the wake of what he has called the "largest human disaster in living memory." MEP Nirj Deva was born in Sri Lanka and was visiting his mother when the disaster struck. He was standing on the balcony of a ninth floor hotel room when the gigantic tidal wave hit. He said: "The whole world has collapsed in this poor country. It was all happening below me and I could see it going on. I saw people running and struggling. I saw bars being smashed to bits. But what I saw was pretty moderate compared to what happened in the south of the country, where people were dying in hoards." Mr Deva is now taking an active part in the disaster relief in Sri Lanka. "What is required urgently - and the good people of Farnham could probably do this - is the donation of tents, about 500 water pumps and generators, insulin and water purification tablets," he said. Mr Deva has requested that aid for many thousands of children affected by the disaster be channelled through the Save The Children Fund, which has an effective organisation in Sri Lanka.
