HASLEMERE town councillor Michael Barnes was elected as the new mayor of Haslemere at the town council annual meeting last night (Thursday).
Mr Barnes was nominated as town mayor on the Tory-controlled town council, following a decision by Peter Isherwood not to stand. He said when he was nominated that he wanted to see a town council "working as a team irrespective of party politics".
Michael and his wife Sarah who runs Haslemere Antiques Market, are both well known in Haslemere and Grayswood where they have lived for the last 25 years.
Mr Barnes was elected to Haslemere Town Council in 1999 and represents Haslemere North and Grayswood.
Stephen Mulliner, who represents the same ward, is expected to be elected as his deputy.
