PLANS for a millennium party in Farnham will be discussed by town councillors on Monday (June 21).

Farnham Initiative Manager Phyllida Adams told The Herald this week that plans for the party, which could be held in the town's central car park, are still on track.

She said: "What I can say is that everything is very much going ahead and there are a lot of things underway at the moment. I will be making a full report to the town council's millennium sub-committee on Monday."

The council have already put aside £20,000 for the planned December 31 celebrations. The money could be used for local bands, mobile catering and a spectacular aerial fireworks display.

But there have been concerns about whether Waverley Borough Council will grant permission for the party to be held in the car park and local police have suggested that the roads surrounding the party be closed for millennium night.

Mrs Adams, who has led the event's working party, also held a meeting with residents who live around the car park to address any concerns they had.

A report will be put before the sub-committee next week.

She said: "We have got to secure formal agreement from Waverley to use the car park and we are working towards a substantial document that they require of anyone who wants to use any of their areas.

"We have to reassure them that we are taking this party seriously with a view to health and safety issues. That will also go before the committee on Monday.

"And we have submitted a report to the district engineer Graham Hodgson about the police recommendation to ease pressure on the one-way system and he is looking at that."
