MORE bad luck has cast its shadow over Lindford Cricket Club which had its cricket pitches vandalised on Sunday night.

Somebody drove a vehicle at speed over the pitches at Broxhead Farm, churning up the surface of four of the pitches sometime between 9 pm on Sunday and 10 am the following day.

Lindford Sports Association's Frank Lunt told The Herald that the damage was caused by somebody who was "mindless" and said that this was the latest in a string of bad luck for the club.

"It is heartbreaking really to work very hard on something and then for somebody to just come along and ruin it," he said.

"We have had a lot to deal with recently, what with the foot-and-month and being closed for three months and the loss of revenue, and we were just starting to get back on our feet and then this happens."

Mr Lunt said that whoever was responsible drove a vehicle around in a circle three times over four of the 12 pitches leaving deep wheel marks.

This forced the club to carry out emergency repairs although the four pitches are still out of action.

"On Monday we were there until about 9-30 in the evening trying to reinstate it, but you can't reinstate turf just like that. It needs re-sowing, watering and nursing and it just takes time.

"This has not stopped us playing but obviously four of the 12 pitches are out of commission.

"Really I would ask that if anyone knows anything can they contact the police."

An appeal for witnesses has also been made by Whitehill police with people urged to contact Pc Roger Harris on 0845 045 45 45 if they have information.
