PLANS have been submitted for a new housing estate next to St Lucia Lodge in Bordon, to replace a number of derelict Army buildings.
An outline planning application has been submitted to East Hampshire District Council by Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon.
The application for the MoD-owned land seeks approval in principle for a housing estate at RE Lines in Lindford Road.
Forty-two homes are suggested, but that number could change if planning permission is granted and a full application is submitted by a housing developer at a later date.
EHDC case officer Nicky Powis explained: ÒAt the moment they are just seeking to establish the principle of a housing development there.Ó
The RE Lines site has been derelict for three years and was the scene of a recent fire fought by more than 50 firefighters.
Many of the buildings there were built in in 1950s and they have been used for a variety of purposes, including a scout HQ.
The site forms part of an area of MoD land the future of which is being scrutinised and which could be sold off as being no longer needed.
EHDC is proposing to designate St Lucia Lodge as suitable to be converted into an hotel, and the MoD has been working towards the disposal of RE Lines for some time.
