YOUNG members of Farnham School of Tae Kwon Do have been back in tournament action. Deborah West, Estelle Eltham, Sophie Raine, Elena Houghton, Daisy Johnson, Tyla Nawrattel, Oliver Conteras, William Houghton and Elliott Owen competed at the TSA Invitational Tournament in Kent. There were some exceptional performances from the youngsters, both in traditional patterns and point-stop sparring.
Eight-year-old Deborah showed little sign of nerves in her first tournament and put on an outstanding display to win gold in the junior grade patterns category. Patterns are a technical aspect of Tae Kwon Do, comprising a set of attacking and defensive movements executed in a logical sequence, where the judges award marks for correct technique, focus and power.
Oliver, 12, fought his way to gold in his junior grade sparring category. There were battling performances from 11-year-old Estelle and 14-year-old Daisy in their respective senior grade sparring categories, with both girls taking home silver medals.
There is a new crop of young competitors emerging at Farnham School of Tae Kwon Do, each growing in tournament experience.
Coach Tim Ayres-Townshend is hoping the club can add to its list of world, British and English champions and medallists during the coming months. The squad will be in action again next month at the GTI National Open Championship in Cheltenham.
