LESS than two months after it opened, Haslemere councillors have called for more facilities for young skateboarders.

At last Thursday's meeting of the finance and general planning committee, councillors approved a £1,000 grant for additional equipment.

Ted Orchard asked that the councillors consider spending £750 on a "fun box", a small- scale ramp that only the younger skaters would want to use.

Jackie Keen said that it was becoming very apparent that the very young who were meant to use the park were being ousted by the older ones. "I was alarmed to see five or six year olds skateboarding alone," she said.

Mrs Keen added: "We have given them a taste for the sport but can't provide the facilities. The time to expand has come sooner than we thought."

Michael Barnes said that the council should arrange for someone to take the views of the skaters themselves.

Mr Orchard replied that he had visited the skate park recently to observe, and that he had spent 45 minutes speaking to all kinds of people.

Stephen Mulliner expressed concern about safety. He recommended that a sign saying "do not skate in the road" should be put up as soon as possible.

After these measures were approved, Mary Foryszewski suggested that any skaters who had ideas they wished to put forward should use Sport Haslemere's website.
