WAVERLEY Brough Council has expressed disappointment at a lack of respect from a small minority of people, after Gostrey Meadow bridge was once again vandalised.
Last Saturday the wooden spindles on the bridge over the River Wey had once again been kicked in.
A similar incident happened in May this year, with the damages costing the council over £300 in repairs.
The images, posted on social media sparked an angry response from residents who are now calling for CCTV in the area as they grow tired of vandalism spoiling community attractions for others.
One comment pointed towards the council installing metal railings instead of wooden posts to deter vandalism and ensure money won’t have to be spent on repairs every few months.
Another disgruntled local added that it was the “same with the bridge over towards the leisure centre, which is routinely kicked in as well - so pointless and yes, incredibly dangerous.”
The bridge, which sits next to a popular paddling area for children and parents in the summer, and is often used for footfall between the station and the town centre has now been left with a dangerous opening in the railings.
The council says it does not know how much the repairs will cost.
A statement from the borough council added: “Gostrey Meadow is one of Waverley’s award-winning parks and the council is committed to keeping it to a high standard to be enjoyed by the community.
“It is a real shame that a small minority of people don’t respect the park and have vandalised the bridge.
“We have reported the incident to our colleagues at Surrey Police and are in discussions with them on how the area will be policed in the future.”
