FARNHAM is to have a new piece of public art specially commissioned by the Farnham Public Art Trust, to mark the year of the Queen's Jubilee.

Sited in the rear courtyard of Boots the Chemists, at the top of the central car park, this unique feature will consist of a mosaic panel to be designed by Sally Smith of Opus Mosaics in Headley.

Work will start immediately and the mosaic is expected to be completed and installed in the autumn.

The trust has just announced the launch of their new project. The mosaic will have the theme Farnham past and present, and the first stage of the work will consist of consultations with the local community and workshops in schools, to suggest ideas for the subject matter.

There will be reference in the design to the Queen's Jubilee, and Sally Smith has suggested that there are several ways in which this could be done, perhaps by including the dates of the Queen's reign in Roman numerals, or perhaps by using real gold leaf pieces in the design.

"It may be that the Queen's Jubilee represents a good opportunity to involve Farnham schools," Ms Smith said.

"Children of all ages could be asked to draw or paint images that capture what the jubilee means to them."

The trust's joint-chairmen, Sue Farrow, Mary Nevile, and Gloria Dyche said that they were delighted that this project, planned since last autumn, will now be going ahead.

"We believe that this will be Farnham's only permanent commemoration of the Jubilee," Mary Nevile said, "and we are proud to be able to create something lasting to mark this important moment in our history".
