PETER Ellis has climbed the highest mountain on each of the seven continents and is one of only about 35 people in the UK and about 350 in the world to have done so.

He is an inspirational speaker, and will be talking about his experiences in climbing Mount Everest, Elbrus, Kilimanjaro and others, at St Mary’s Church in Frensham on Friday, July 1.

Peter has taken photographs to illustrate his talk and those who have heard him speak say he is very inspirational and entertaining.

It is just over 30 years since the idea of the Seven Summits Challenge was conceived, and Richard Bass was the first climber to complete the challenge in 1985. Afterwards, however, a controversy then erupted concerning the actual list of the summits.

Depending on the definition used for a continent the highest summit in Europe is either Mont Blanc (France, 4807m) or Elbrus (Russia, 5662m), and the highest in Australia/Oceania is either Kosciuszko (Australia, 2228m) or the Carstensz Pyramid (Indonesia, 4884m).

Today there are two official lists Bass’s version with Kosciuszko as the seventh summit, and a second list with the Carstensz Pyramid as the seventh summit. In both cases, Elbrus is considered as the highest in Europe.

Tickets are available from either Frensham Village Shop on 01252 795240, or from Harry Glover on 01252 797827 and are priced at £10. Each ticket includes a glass of wine or soft drink, or a cup of tea or coffee. The proceeds of the evening will be donated to St Mary’s Tower Repair Fund.
