A prominent business figure in Haslemere has praised South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt for the positive impact his appointment as chancellor has had on the fortunes of the town’s businesses.

Haslemere and District Chamber of Trade and Commerce president Craig McGowan has seen an improvement in the town’s fortunes, with prominent national media coverage and new businesses opening up.

Mr McGowan said: “Jeremy Hunt being appointed chancellor has done us a power of good in terms of publicity.

“By association he’s brought attention to Haslemere – it feels like the town has become the centre of business.

“It’s been good for the whole area, but there’s been a real spotlight on Haslemere.

“It happens to be that our MP, Jeremy Hunt, is now chancellor of the exchequer, and we are very grateful to him for getting that position.

“GB News came down to Haslemere for live interviews from Oliver’s for the autumn statement. The Times also interviewed a number of businesses in the town, and ran a double-page spread the day after the autumn statement.

“We’ve had a number of new businesses opening up in the town in the past 12 months.

“The Coppa Club has opened where the Georgian Hotel was and MOMA has opened where Barclays was. Dilli will provide fine Indian dining at the old NatWest site, and when you add in RedH, the town is developing a vibrant evening economy with a number of eateries.

“The town is having a bit of a buzz and there has been good support for our Christmas shopping discount voucher scheme from retailers as well.”

Haslemere has been hit by the cost-of-living crisis, but Mr McGowan stressed the need for businesses to remain positive.

“You have to see opportunity or you will cry,” he said. “The war in Ukraine has been tough for businesses in this country, but that’s nothing compared to what the Ukrainians have had to face. The business energy price cap has been an absolute godsend for businesses.”

South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt said: “I started my Bounceback South West Surrey campaign for small, independent shops and businesses after the pandemic. The high street remains a challenge, so I am particularly heartened to learn a number of new businesses have opened in Haslemere. I look forward to meeting the owners and wish them a prosperous season.”
