SOUTH West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt met members of Christian Aid's Cut the Carbon march at St Andrew's Church, Farnham, as the footsore group stopped off just days before reaching London. The marchers had covered 1,000 miles since they set out from Belfast in July on the UK's longest ever protest march. They asked the MP to support moves to strengthen climate change legislation which will be debated in parliament this month. Christian Aid is calling for tougher targets on reducing carbon emissions and for aviation to be included in the Climate Change Bill. Representatives from Africa and South America told the well-attended public meeting about the impact climate change is already having on their countries, and speakers asserted that climate change has to be tackled at a global, national and individual level. In conclusion, Jeremy Hunt echoed the views of the audience and the protesters by commenting that if Farnham retuned to being more welcoming for people on foot it would benefit residents' daily lives as well as potentially cutting carbon emissions. He hoped that future generations living in a less polluted town would look back on today's clogged and fume-filled streets and ask: "How could they have lived like this?"
