CULT 90s’ TV fitness fanatic Mr Motivator dropped into Farnham Leisure Centre last week to support the Help4Harry fund, set up by the family of a Farnham schoolboy fighting a progressive muscle-wasting condition.
Mr Motivator, famed for his eye-catching aerobics gear and enthusiastic work-outs, flew in from Jamaica especially to host two aerobics classes – raising £600 for Help4Harry, founded by Sue Barnley whose eight-year-old son Harry has Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
“It was brilliant, we all had a fabulous time, his spirit and energy is so infectious. What a day! What a legend,” said Sue.
“We had the pleasure of spending the day with Mr Motivator, he came into the boys school, William Cobbett Primary, and did a couple of work-outs there and then came back to our house for some fun with the boys.
“Then off to Farnham Leisure Centre for two aerobic classes hosted by Mr Motivator. He gave up his time with a constant smile on his face, oh and we raised over £600 in the process. Thanks to Farnham Leisure Centre who gave us the space.
“We recently went to GOSH (Great Ormond Street Hospital) for Harry’s assessment for Translarna and we should receive the drug this week by courier.”
The money will be donated to national charity Muscular Dystrophy UK for research into Harry’s condition, which causes muscles to weaken and waste over time and affects mainly boys; many of whom are in wheelchairs by the age of ten.
Anneke Liefting, the charity’s regional development manager for the South East, said: “Mr Motivator was an inspiration to the children at Harry’s school [William Cobbett in Weybourne], getting 180 students to boost their fitness. He taught 60 adults (including myself) who re-lived their childhood in the evening and raised £600 for Help4Harry.
“This will fund a further 14 hours of ground-breaking research. Without the support from exceptional people like Mr Motivator and the Barnley family, the charity would not be driving forward the progress in finding better treatments and cures for children just like Harry.”
This isn’t the first time Mr Motivator has helped support the Barnley family; last year he appeared on ITV’s All Star Mr and Mrs and won, donating his £22,500 winnings to the Help4Harry fund.
