A HASLEMERE man who helped establish groundbreaking sporting facilities in the town has been awarded an MBE in the New Year's honours.

Eric Thomson, 77, a founding member of the Haslemere Sports Association and honorary member of Haslemere Hockey Club, was recognised in the Queen's Honours for his voluntary service to sport in the town.
