ROADSIDE vandals have been accused of jeopardising one of Liphook's most successful charity fundraising days, the Classic Car Day, which is due to take place next weekend. Jeremy Austin-Olsen, who runs the annual event at The Deers Hut pub in Griggs Green, says he is mystified by the disappearance of signs he put up to advertise the event. "Every year I go round putting up about 50 signs but this year someone seems determined to take them down again. The problem is particularly bad in Haslemere." he said. Mr Austin-Olsen continued: "The signs are important because they help bring in cars and spectators for what is a purely charitable event. "They are only ever up there for three weeks and I make sure I take them down again immediately after the event – which is next Sunday." Around 400 classic cars, including Mr Austin- Olsen's 1937 Rolls Royce, are expected to fill the paddock at The Deers Hut for the event, which is sponsored by estate agents Clarke Gammon Wellers and BMW dealership Barons of Hindhead. Arrangements have been made for a park-and-ride facility for spectators at nearby Old Thorns and there will be a barbecue and refreshments. Mr Austin-Olsen said: "I have been running this event for several years and it is very much part of the calendar not just in Liphook but for all the towns and villages around. "People come from all over the place to give their old cars a day out and let everyone share in a bit of nostalgia.' The 2008 event opens at 11am on Sunday, July 6. The Deers Hut pub is just off the A3 south of Hindead.  (take the Griggs Green turn-off just after the Shell Garage). Entry is by voluntary donation and this year's beneficiaries will be the Liphook Scouts and Guides and the Liphook Carnival Committee, which distributes funds to various local charities.
