A CHILDREN'S nanny, fairly new to working in Alton, has expressed her horror at the irresponsibility of some adults with regard to road safety.
Clancy Buffham, who lives in Bordon, says she is astounded at the way in which not only other road users but pedestrians fail to adhere to the highway code.
Having worked in Alton for six months she says she has nearly been involved in several accidents, when driving in the town.
She recalls in particular a recent incident involving a cyclist who, she says, turned right directly across her path at the roundabout on Church Street, at the top of Vicarage Hill.
"It was definitely my right of way and yet he didn't stop. I could have killed him and I had children in the car," she said.
Ms Buffham also cannot believe how often people, particularly those using the High Street, walk across the road without looking. She pinpoints in particular Boots corner where she feels a look left sign might alert people to the danger of on-coming vehicles.
"When there are school children around you do take extra care and make allowances but you generally assume that adults know enough about road safety not to step out in front of an obviously moving car," she said.
Having worked as a children's nanny for the past six years, Ms Buffham says that people in the bigger towns like Guildford are not as irresponsible as Alton's adults.
And they, she suggests, should take greater responsibility for their action and set a better example to the younger generation.
