WHITEHILL Police has just unveiled its plan to revamp the Neighbourhood Watch.
The police want to change the current system to report incidents to one which will involve regular meetings. The initiative will enable the police to crack down on crime in the town. "It is still in the developmental stages but we plan to meet up with the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators every eight weeks, so that we can discuss the specific issues that local residents want to be addressed," said Sgt Peter Miller.
All the Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinators in Whitehill and Bordon will sit with the police, representatives from educational welfare, EHDC's youth workers team and a spokesman for Whitehill Town Council.
Each co-ordinator will be joined by a resident who will be able to tell officers about concerns in their local area.
"For example, there could be a problem with speeding in a particular area, and we could then set up a traffic initiative in order to monitor the situation, and come back with the results at the next meeting.
"It will give residents a chance to register their views with us in a more straightforward and productive manner,", Sgt Miller added. He felt that the initiative would allow the Neighbourhood Watch leaders to act as the eyes and ears of the police.
"They can almost act as a filter to discern whether an issue is a police matter or whether it would be best to contact the local council to resolve the problem.
"Hopefully this system will be much more interactive, as in the past, the police would have given details to residents, rather than the other way round. The format will now be a lot more structured and will enhance the network between residents and the police," explained Sgt Miller.
Whitehill police are in the process of sending letters to all of the Neighbourhood Watch leaders in the area to inform them of the alterations.
The next meeting is likely to be in September to ensure maximum attendance.
