FARNHAM Netball Club’s Tina Mumford and Sam Brennan have scooped a prestigious Wavell Invitation Netball League (WINL) award, after their successful fundraiser netted £12,280 for charity.
The Maureen Butler Trophy was presented to the avid netballers who, supported by their team mates, played non-stop for 12 hours on July 1, to raise vital funds for Mind and Tamba (Twins and Multiple Births Association), months after both experiencing tragic losses.
Last October, Tina, who lives in Aldershot, suffered the loss of her son Tom, after the 18 year-old sadly took his life following a long-term battle with mental health issues.
Just weeks later, Sam, who lives in Ash and was pregnant with identical twins, tragically lost her boys Jack and Harley after being diagnosed and undergoing unsuccessful treatment for TTTS (Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome).
WINL decided to present its annual sportsmanship title to the pair as the committee had been “incredibly moved” by their losses.
Chair of WINL, Sharon Moher, said: “Their club came up with a fantastic challenge of a 12-hour match to raise money and awareness for the relevant charities and in doing so raised the profile of netball in the South East with all different standards represented, from back to netballers up to division one, as well as men within the mixed teams.”
She added: “It was a complete success with a massive £12,280 raised and write ups in local papers and coverage on the radio stations.”
Twenty-eight teams from across the South East played against Farnham’s two squads in the challenge at St Nicholas’ School.
