TO support residents' concerns about potential threats to health services, Waverley announced last week that it has re-established its health care special interest group. The group is being re-established at a time when the future of the Royal Surrey County Hospital is in doubt and changes due at Farnham and Haslemere community hospitals, and Cranleigh Village Hospital, plus the possible closure of Milford Hospital. "Health care is one of the most important issues facing Waverley's residents. As a democratically elected body this council is in a unique position to act as our community's advocate, ensuring that the borough gets its fair share of resources, facilities and clinical expertise," said David Munro, portfolio holder for partnerships. "We are determined to fight for the best possible health care for everyone in the borough." Mr Munro is to chair the group. It will comprise of councillors, a parish and town council representative and experts in the field. The group will seek expert opinion and evidence to help Waverley respond to the consultation document due to be published by the Surrey PCT in the autumn. This consultation document is expected to make proposals to change how health services are delivered across Surrey and is particularly important to Waverley because of the rural nature of the borough and the length of time it can take to get to health services, especially in emergencies. Councillors at Waverley are keen that the council's voice is heard loud and clear throughout this process.
