A NEW helpline and email service for Surrey teenagers and young adults has been launched.

‘I need help’ offers a listening and support service in a safe, non-judgemental environment which is free, confidential and anonymous.

Its main focus is on 14 to 25 year olds experiencing serious problems that affect their emotional well-being and mental health.

Volunteers are trained to listen and support callers and to help them acknowledge the challenges they face, understand how they are being affected and consider their available options.

Tracy Pizzanelli, helpline manager said: “We regularly get calls from people who to the outside world appear to be living happy and balanced lives, but who in reality, are struggling every day.

“We often support callers and emailers with an on-going situation, as well as those who need help and support at a particular time.”

One anonymous caller said: “It took me quite a lot of guts to call the helpline, but I was so pleased I did. They just listened to me and made me feel calmer about the situation.”

‘I need help’ is part of FamilyLine and the National Association of Helplines and is supported by Surrey County Council and local borough and district councils.

It has a database of more than 700 local and national organisations which can be accessed via its helpline and email service.

Tracy added: “If you are worried about a teenager or young adult and don’t know where to turn, please give them our details, or you can contact us for support.”

‘I need help’ is staffed Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm for calls and emails.
