FIVE years of hard work was finally rewarded on Sunday when the new Hindhead sports pavilion was officially declared open. Waverley's mayor Jacquie Keen performed the opening ceremony during a family fun and sports day. The timber structure, which sits on top of the concrete foundations of the original pavilion, has been completely rebuilt to create new changing rooms, bar, kitchen, showers, a veranda and other facilities. For nine months during the building process, sports clubs have been forced to use a marquee. However, the behind-the-scenes work to get the project up and running has taken five years. The fundraising committee was twice turned down by the lottery for funding but undeterred, fundraisers managed to secure grants and loans from local councils and associations. Local businesses and churches have also contributed towards the project.
