THE Brightwells Gostrey Centre could be found a home on the Memorial Hall site – be it temporary or permanent.

The possibility has arisen following a letter sent last month to Waverley's 57 councillors by the centre's chairman and vice-chairman.

It explained the "intolerable" situation staff and elderly clients would face once construction of the East Street scheme gets under way.

Changes without consultation to the access of the replacement Gostrey Centre within the new development were also a bone of contention. According to the letter, they will render the scheme 'unfit for purpose'.

Dr Stephen Inman, chairman of the centre's trustees, confirmed that Gostrey representatives had visited the Memorial Hall site with Waverley representatives.

He added that discussions were at too early a stage to comment further.

Adam Taylor-Smith, the councillor who holds the portfolio for East Street, this week neither confirmed or denied that the Memorial Hall site is under consideration.

He said: "Waverley is in regular discussions with the trustees of the Brightwells Gostrey Centre. We are committed to try to deliver an improved building and facilities for the residents of Farnham and the surrounding area.

"We are actively working with the trustees and the manager of the centre to find the best way forward and are discussing a range of options that will ensure that the centre can thrive and continue to offer support to the community of Farnham.

"I really want to deliver top-notch purpose built facilities for use by users of the Gostrey Centre."
