ÒUNSIGHTLY and deterioratingÓ toilets in front of St PeterÕs Church in Petersfield, which are set to be saved by East Hampshire District Council, could be used as a small shop or cafe.
The district council is inviting people to put forward development proposals for the toilet buildings on the Square.
At a meeting of the cabinet on Wednesday night councillors were being asked to agree to spend £5,000 to make the site and building safe.
In a report to the cabinet EHDC head of property services, Philip Parker, said the toilets had seriously deteriorated and were ÒunsightlyÓ.
He said £3,700 would have to be spent on railings to prevent access to the rear of the site. Wall repairs and other work would bring the refurbishment total to £5,000.
In his report Mr Parker said: ÒThere are proposed general improvements to the Square that are planned to occur during 2002 and therefore it is felt prudent to move forward with improvement proposals in parallel with these developments.
ÒIt is felt that, subject to membersÕ views and planning permission, the site and building could be used for small- scale retail or catering use.Ó
In 1996 the council began negotiations to let the building to the Petersfield Museum Steering Trust for use as museum. No progress has been made on that proposal.
Members of the cabinet were set to be advised to invite the museum to submit any applications for the toilet buildings, which Mr Parker said would be given Òsympathetic considerationÓ.
Invitations to sumit proposals to develop the site will be advertised in the local press.
