PLANS for Haslemere's new library and youth centre are to be unveiled by the county council in November.

The news comes as town councillors publicly thanked Haslemere's county councillor, Christine Stevens, for her efforts in securing the cash for the new facility.

As previously reported by The Herald, Surrey County Council has agreed to set aside £2 million for the new building which will replace the Wey Centre.

At last Thursday's meeting of Haslemere Town Council, mayor Jean Arrick expressed her thanks to the county council and in particular to Mrs Stevens, who championed the project.

"I just want to give the full council's thanks to Christine Stevens for the money that she got from Surrey County Council for our new library and youth facility," she said.

"It is very exciting news and I think that we should formally recognise that."

Mrs Arrick told the finance and general purposes committee that the new plans were to be unveiled to town councillors in November.

It is still uncertain as to whether the proposed new library will be on the existing site of the Wey Centre or at the front of the Wey Hill car park.

Mrs Arrick urged the town council to decide quickly whether or not it supports the new plans.

"I would urge us to come to a consensus as soon as possible," she said.

"Everybody is still working very hard with all of this."
