ENGLISH Nature confirmed this week that three sites owned by East Hampshire District Council meet the criteria for designation as local nature reserves.
The sites are at Buriton Chalk Pits, Liss Railway Walk and Catherington Lith at Horndean.
"The designation is a tribute to the involvement of local people, parish councils and volunteers who have all been instrumental in managing the sites in partnership with the district council," said Martin Healey, EHDC's countryside manager.
"Each of the sites now has a five-year management plan which identifies the requirements for ensuring that their high ecological and recreational value is maintained or improved."
The district council will also be able to apply to English Nature for grants available specifically for local nature reserves.
Council leader Elizabeth Cartwright said: "We are delighted with the designation of these sites. It demonstrates the council's commitment to the environment by recognising the work and investment which has gone into managing these areas."
Interpretation material, including information boards, will be produced to help people understand more about the high biodiversity value of the sites.
Anyone who is interested in becoming involved with the management of the sites should contact Martin Healey on 01730 234386.
