NEWLY appointed Haslemere Methodist Church minister Rev John Illsley’s hope is for “a church where everyone will find a listening, caring welcome”.
Mr Illsley, who has formerly served in Sheffield, Derby, Hong Kong and Lancashire, takes over from Rev David Muskett, who is now East Solent and Downs Methodist Church circuit superintendent.
Having retired in September last year, Mr Illsley “jumped” at the chance to return to active service.
He said: “I am delighted because Haslemere really is a church that seeks to serve its community.
“The premises have been recently refurbished and are now really good.
“The open-door coffee lounge is open Tuesday to Saturday mornings. The church serves the community as the home of Haslemere Food Bank and twice a month hosts Haslemere Kitchen, a free community lunch.
“We know church attendance has declined, but it is my experience that there is a great spiritual hunger.
“My hope is for a church where worshipping will be an encouraging experience.”
