A NEW road layout on the Water Lane (B3208) roundabout junction has been blamed for causing a minor collision.

Drivers have historically used both lanes to filter left onto the Shepherd and Flock roundabout, blocking access for drivers wanting to turn right towards the Six Bells roundabout.

New markings on the approach clearly show two arrows - one to the left and the other to the right.

This has caused confusion among drivers though, as one lady who was unaware of the changes had a minor collision on the roundabout.

The lady, who asked to remain anonymous, believes that ‘new layout ahead’ signs are needed on the approach, as drivers in queuing traffic cannot see the road markings.

A recent post in the Facebook group ‘Farnham Rants’ shows that the issue continues to cause concern. A comment from Paul Spiller states that it “doesn’t matter what the road markings say, this roundabout doesn’t work”.

But another member, Elizabeth Nickle, said she had “never had an issue with these lanes because they are clearly marked”, while Rebecca Price said: “Left to go left, right to go right. Simple really!”

Others suggested the need for a third lane, such as Sam Turner who said: “Three lanes are required. It’s currently a nonsensical shambles.”

A Surrey Highways spokesperson told Stephen Spence, county councillor for Farnham North, that the lane guidance arrows are there to try and improve the situation.

Mr Spence said: “It is always distressing when a resident has an accident. Following a review, due to complaints about poor lane discipline at the roundabout, Highways added guidance arrows, however many motorists still wish to use the right lane to turn left.

“Ideally there should be two left turn lanes and one right turn but that would involve widening the entry to the roundabout which would cost about £50,000, money Highways don’t currently have.

“As a result of the Farnham Herald raising this with me on behalf of the resident I am going to add this to the list of issues county councillors are discussing with Jeremy Hunt in relation to a plan for a holistic solution to Farnham traffic.”
