PIONEERING online services have been introduced in six GP surgeries across Farnham in a bid to tackle diabetes.

Following a £2m grant from the NHS Test Bed Programme, the North East Hampshire and Farnham Clinical Commissioning Group launched the online service named ‘BEATdiabetes’.

The scheme offers three separate programmes which tailor to each patient’s particular needs, helping their mental and physical welfare while battling their diabetes.

Sarah Carrod, GP and the BEATdiabetes clinical lead, said: “A lot of people with diabetes do not realise they suffer a subconscious anxiety as a result of their condition.

“That means they can’t take on board the advice or changes required to help improve their diabetes.”

When asked about the importance and need for a new diabetes service, Sarah said: “Diabetes is a major problem – and it is increasing every year. There are currently 4.7 million people who have diabetes and it is increasing year on year. It costs the NHS £27 million each day.”

The service has been recognised across the UK, particularly by prime minister Theresa May, who invited the BEATdiabetes team to Downing Street to recognise and thank them for their efforts.

Launched across north-east Hampshire and Farnham, the six selected Farnham GP surgeries are:

* Crondall New Surgery,

* Downing Street Group Practice,

* Farnham Dene Medical Practice,

* Holly Tree Surgery,

* River Wey Medical Practice, and

* The Ferns Medical Practice.

Working alongside their GP, patients can begin the programmes before returning six months later to assess their progress and development.

Patients must first register online at BEATdiabetes.org.uk and attend a BEATdiabetes clinic appointment.
