A NEW £20,000 skatepark on Petersfield's Love Lane site came a step closer last week when Petersfield town councillors agreed to ask three experts to come up with a scheme. Members of the Love Lane Sports Ground anti- social behaviour working party took their decision after hearing from police Sergeant Rhona Anderson that young skateboarding enthusiasts in the town were becoming impatient for action. "The thing that breaks my heart is that this is not happening quickly enough," Sgt Anderson told the meeting. "All the youngsters are coming back to me and asking when they are going to get this ramp." She said her view had not changed. Either the town council should bulldoze the current facilities in Love Lane or update them. She told the meeting there was, at present, a huge health and safety risk because the current skate ramp was a "tired shabby wreck" which was being damaged and was in parts unsafe. By providing a new scheme and providing it quickly, she said, Petersfield Town Council would be showing a commitment to the young people of Petersfield. Sgt Anderson pointed out that skateboard enthusiasts regarded Rampchild as the best equipment manufacturer. The meeting decided to ask wo companies and Rampchild to come up with designs within a £20,000 budget which would suit BMXers, skateboarders and bladers. Councillors want the designs by the end of November. They will then consult the youngsters on the three schemes and meet again on December 8 to decide which one to accept. After the meeting 20-year-old Jason Hurd, who last year made a special plea to town councillors to improve skateboarding facilities, told The Herald: "We have been waiting for something to happen for a long time and we are really happy that the ball is finally rolling in the right direction." Jason, who is now studying at Leicester University, added: "I have travelled all over the country and been to many different skate parks and the best ones are the ones built by Rampchild. They are always the most fun and the most challenging."
