THE Tesco traffic lights saga continued as Surrey County Council admitted there's still a problem.

The lights have caused anger and frustration since they were installed almost three years ago when Tesco opened in Wey Hill and the subject was raised at last Wednesday's annual town meeting.

Mayor Stephen Mulliner said there had been "mixed reactions" to the Wey Hill scheme and that work on the pavements and tree planting would take place this week.

But local resident Trevor Burton complained that the lights were still only allowing only four cars to pass through at a time.He asked: "Will something be done about the lights in phase two of the Wey Hill improvements - if not what was the point of phase one?"

After saying that the lights "were the best that could be achieved" following last month's resurfacing work, a spokesman for SCC said this week a fault had been discovered and it was thought that "the resurfacing might have caused the problem" damaging the sensitive sensors.

"The engineers are working on it," said the spokesman

At the meeting, Mr Mulliner called for mini-roundabouts at the entrance to Tesco and Lion Lane with the plea that "he hoped common sense would prevail" over the problem junctions.

The SCC spokesman said there were no plans to install roundabouts.
