HASLEMERE residents will have to wait a few extra weeks before they get the chance to see for themselves plans for a new library and youth centre in the town. An exhibition was planned for next Tuesday, but has been postponed by Surrey County Council at the last minute after it found out that the exhibition clashed with a Waverley Borough Council meeting. The county council is keen for the borough council to be involved in the consultation process over the new facility which is to be built on the Wey Hill car park owned by Waverley Borough Council. In exchange the Wey Centre at the back of the site is to be demolished and transformed into a car park and access will be shared. Although the delay is expected to frustrate some in the town eager to have their say, it does give the council extra time to work on design and technical matters which have been raised through consultation with The Haslemere Society. "For the sake of a minor administrative exercise, to postpone the exhibition, I am sure the slight delay will be worth it - giving us an improved foundation for broader discussion," Haslemere's county councillor Christine Stevens said. "My hope is to get this plan as right as possible while keeping the scheme on track for the planning stage this summer."
