A FIERCE and deep rooted conflict of opinion came to a head in public last week over the future of Alton's Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital.

Clear from the outset that NHS managers believed the hospital had to go, the failure at last week's Community Health Council meeting, to acknowledge the strength of support for re-opening the once world-famous orthopaedic unit, has stunned local campaigners.
