ALTON will not be among the beneficiaries of central government's new policy to put extra police officers on the beat, the town's station commander Insp. Julie Earle told a public meeting last week.

Although vacancies exist at the Alton station, Hampshire's chief constable Paul Kernaghan has decided that there are other communities in Hampshire which will take priority because of their greater need, she reported.
